China visa photo: 33 x 48 mm and a 40–120 KB file

China's spec is unusual. Watch the three details that don't match other countries:

  • Print size: 33 x 48 mm (not 35 x 45 mm, not 2 x 2 in)
  • Digital file size: 40–120 KB — the COVA portal rejects files outside this band
  • Digital pixel dimensions: 354 x 472 to 420 x 560 pixels, JPEG only

Ears must be visible

The Consular Department explicitly requires "ears visible" — pin back long hair. And bangs that cover the forehead or eyebrows are the single most common rejection reason, even side-swept bangs that touch one eyebrow.

Head-tilt limits

China enforces hard tilt thresholds that catch home photos taken on a couch or chair: no more than 20° left/right, no more than 25° up/down. Square your shoulders to the camera and keep the phone level.

COVA "Photo check failed" is a known bug

If your photo meets every spec above and you see the "Photo check failed" message on COVA, submit anyway. Consular officers manually review and accept compliant photos. Always bring a printed 33 x 48 mm copy to the consulate to attach to your printed COVA form — required even after a successful digital upload.
